Depression is a serious mental illness where a person has a persistent feeling of sadness, loneliness, grief, uselessness, and emotional pain. This exists despite external circumstances, though it can be exacerbated by them.
Many of us can feel depressed without experiencing the extremes of diagnosed depression. Often this is due to ruminating on events from the past which reinforce a story about ourselves. I work with clients to rewrite their stories, to come to terms with the past so that they can move forward into a healthy and productive future. By offering empathic listening, gentle confrontation and reality testing, I can help my clients to change their relationship with the past, to learn from it and grow from their experiences.
